Amidst the bustling cityscape, the New Chapel to Theology Building stands as a beacon of faith. The New Chapel to Theology Building isn’t just a modern structure. It carries the legacy of Christian history in Shenzhen, dating back to 1846. The story begins with the arrival of evangelists, sent by the Basel Mission and the Rhenish Missionary Society. These missionaries laid the groundwork for the Christian community in Shenzhen, initially known as Bao’an county. In 1898, the Rhenish Missionary Society established a church in Luohu District, marking a significant step in the area’s Christian history. This original church persevered through tumultuous times, including the rise and fall of governments, invasion, and civil war. Rebuilt in 1949, the church became a symbol of resilience. However, the Cultural Revolution brought a period of silence, with services halted and the building repurposed. The church’s story resumed in 1984 when it became the first in Shenzhen to reopen after the Cultural Revolution. The congregation grew, eventually leading to the construction of the New Chapel to Theology Building in Meilin in 2002. The modern, angular white structure evokes the image of Noah’s Ark, standing tall amidst a peaceful garden. The New Chapel to Theology Building houses two spacious halls, offices, meeting rooms, and dormitories, serving as a hub for the thriving Christian community. While the original Heping Lu church no longer exists, its spirit lives on in the nearby Christian Peace Church, along with the Christian Luohu Church, established in 2011. The New Chapel to Theology Building symbolizes the enduring presence of Christianity in Shenzhen, a testament to its resilient past and vibrant present.
