Lost to time yet not entirely forgotten Hradiště Děvín offers more than meets the eye. This isn’t just a hill. It’s a landmark steeped in layers of history. Here before us lies the site of Hradiště Děvín.

Let’s journey back. Imagine Prague long before the Charles Bridge or even the bustling Old Town Square. We’re talking about the early Middle Ages. Even earlier settlements existed here. Evidence suggests a settlement from the late Stone Age once stood here.

Hradiště Děvín started as a strategic high point. It was an ideal spot for a fort. The early Slavic tribes recognized its potential. They built a “hradiště” here. That’s a fortified settlement. Hence the name Hradiště Děvín.

The name Děvín itself hints at legends. Some say it’s connected to tales of female warriors. Šárka and her band may have dwelled nearby. These stories add a layer of mystique to Hradiště Děvín.

Fast forward to the 14th century. A stone castle emerged on this very spot. Štěpán z Tetína likely founded it before 1338. This new castle didn’t last very long.

Ownership transferred to the Carthusian monastery before 1376. But by the 15th century the castle was already gone. Some believe it was destroyed by order of Emperor Sigismund. He wanted to eliminate robber baron hideouts. Archaeological finds support a demise before 1420.

Interestingly Hradiště Děvín saw a peculiar fate in the early 16th century. The ruins became a testing ground for new cannons. Prague’s gunsmiths used the site to test their artillery. Imagine the echoes of cannon fire resonating through the valley.

Today little remains of the castle. You’ll find mostly terrain features. The layout was a regular square. The northern side had round towers or bastions at the corners. The keep was formed with palatial wings. A square residential tower likely closed the southern side.

Despite the lack of standing walls the spirit of Hradiště Děvín lingers. It offers stunning views. From here you can see the Vltava River. The opposite bank stretches out before you.

Visiting Hradiště Děvín is easy. You can combine it with a walk through Prokopské údolí. This nature reserve touches the northern edge of Děvín. The “Ctirad” natural monument is also nearby. Bus line 231 takes you to the “Dívčí hrady” stop.

So as we stand here at Hradiště Děvín remember the layers of time beneath our feet. From ancient settlements to medieval castles and even cannon testing grounds this place has witnessed centuries of change. It is a testament to the enduring power of history hidden in plain sight.
