Seven municipalities a sprawling industrial heart. That’s the Região do Grande ABC. Its story begins long ago with indigenous people and Portuguese explorers. Martim Afonso de Sousa and João Ramalho founded Santo André da Borda do Campo in 1553. This humble village would eventually give birth to the bustling metropolis we see today.
The name ABC Paulista itself is a fascinating piece of history. It’s an acronym for Santo André São Bernardo do Campo and São Caetano do Sul the three original cities of this region. The ‘ABC’ reflects the alphabetical order of their founding influenced by the strong Catholic presence. Later Diadema Mauá Ribeirão Pires and Rio Grande da Serra joined the fold expanding the area’s influence and population.
The 20th century witnessed the remarkable industrial growth of the Região do Grande ABC. It became a hub for automobile manufacturing. Major players like Mercedes-Benz Ford Volkswagen and General Motors set up shop here. This industrial boom led to the rise of powerful labor unions. The region became a cradle of the modern Brazilian labor movement. The strikes of the 1970s and 1980s were pivotal moments shaping national politics and the very foundation of the Workers’ Party (PT). The influence of the ABC’s powerful labor movement even extended to the arts especially theater.
Today the Região do Grande ABC is a complex tapestry. It balances its industrial legacy with a vibrant cultural scene. Each municipality retains its unique character. São Bernardo do Campo boasts the largest population and area. São Caetano do Sul is the smallest. Rio Grande da Serra holds its charm with its rich indigenous history and thriving artisan community.
