What if I told you this seemingly ordinary industrial district holds a secret history, a story of transformation from a quiet village to a bustling hub? We’re standing in Concord, a key part of Vaughan, just north of Toronto. Concord isn’t just factories and warehouses. It’s a place with a past, a present, and a future interwoven with the growth of the surrounding area. Concord officially became a postal village in 1854 with John Duncan as its first postmaster. The name “Concord” likely comes from Hiram White, an early settler who arrived in Vaughan Township from Concord, Vermont. He farmed land just north of what would become the village. Imagine Concord in the 1880s, a small village with two churches: the Concord Methodist Church and the Cober Dunkard Church. A schoolhouse, built in 1842, served the community. The arrival of Highway 400 in the 1950s marked a turning point. The quiet village began its transformation into the industrial district we see today. Housing developments sprung up, and industries expanded westward. The construction of the MacMillan Yard, a major freight yard for the Canadian National Railway, further solidified Concord’s industrial character. The 1970s witnessed the rise of Glen Shields, a residential area built to accommodate the growing workforce. Later, in the 2000s, the Dufferin Hill residential area added to Concord’s evolving landscape. Concord’s transformation continued with the opening of Highway 407 in 1997, providing even greater access to the area. This highway brought three new interchanges to Concord, facilitating trade and transportation. Today, Concord boasts eight interchanges, connecting it to the wider region. While industry dominates, remnants of Concord’s past linger. Empty spaces offer a glimpse of what once was, while wooded areas and the flowing Don River provide a touch of nature amidst the urban environment. The proposed Concord GO Centre promises further transformation, with plans for a new GO Transit station and a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational developments. Concord stands as a testament to change, a place where history meets progress, where a quiet village has evolved into a vital industrial and residential hub in the Greater Toronto Area.
