Opened in 1973 Lake Braddock Secondary School stands as a testament to educational evolution. Lake Braddock initially lacked walls in many areas. Educators believed this open environment fostered better learning. They soon discovered that teenagers needed more privacy. Temporary walls were added in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This caused significant climate control issues. Many problems remained unresolved until a major renovation.

Lake Braddock’s unique history extends beyond its architectural quirks. The school initially employed the “Forecast Five” system. This involved teams of 150 students. Five teachers were assigned to each team. One for math one for English one for science one for social studies and one for special education. Entire teams would go on field trips together. These teams later received individual names and colors. This innovative approach aimed for personalized learning long before it became a trend.

Lake Braddock’s athletic programs are legendary. The cross-country teams boast numerous state championships. The girls’ team won in 1987 and again in 2015. The boys also won in 1987 and 2015. Their combined wins exceed those of any other Lake Braddock sport. The girls’ soccer team achieved an undefeated season in 1987 winning the state title with a perfect 20-0 record. They were also the only team in Virginia to win back-to-back AAA state championships in 2006 and 2007. The football team has won multiple district championships. They reached the state championship game in 2009. Their success story stretches back to the school’s opening year. Lake Braddock’s baseball team has also achieved state championships in 2012 and 2019. Their tennis program has accumulated district and regional titles. They clinched the state title for boys’ tennis in 2014. Lake Braddock’s achievements show commitment to excellence across many disciplines.

Lake Braddock’s success extends beyond athletics. Its theatre program consistently garners awards. The program participates in the Cappie Awards winning several accolades including Best Play. The school’s band program has an impressive record of superior ratings. The marching band consistently wins awards at competitions. Its music program has also produced notable alumni. Several have attended prestigious music conservatories including Juilliard. The school’s many clubs and honor societies reflect the students’ diverse talents and passions. Lake Braddock’s journalism programs The Bear Facts yearbook and morning announcement show The Morning Bru also showcase student talent. These programs have faced controversies but have persevered. They demonstrate the school’s commitment to freedom of expression.

The school’s extensive renovations in the mid-2000s represent a significant investment in its future. The $72 million project addressed long-standing issues. It modernized facilities and created a learning environment designed for today’s students. Lake Braddock Secondary School isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place where students have excelled for generations. Lake Braddock is a place where history echoes in every hallway.
