“Meteorites, anyone?” a curious voice piped up. The Geomuseum in Cologne might just have what you’re looking for. Here at the University of Cologne, tucked away in the lecture hall wing on Zülpicher Straße, lies Cologne’s only natural history museum: the Geomuseum. This fascinating institution isn’t just a collection of rocks and fossils. It’s a time capsule, a window into the Earth’s dramatic past and a testament to the power of human curiosity. The Geomuseum’s history is a story of resilience. Originally, two separate collections existed: the Museum of Natural History and the Mineralogical-Geological Collection. Sadly, World War II nearly destroyed both. But like a phoenix from the ashes, they were painstakingly rebuilt by dedicated individuals. In 2000, these collections merged to create the Geomuseum we see today. Inside this unique museum, you’ll find 50,000 specimens, although only a fraction are on display. From meteorites and tektites to minerals from the Siegerland mining region and the vastness of Russia, the Geomuseum offers a glimpse into the Earth’s treasure trove. Admire the varied forms of quartz and calcite, the intricate structures of zeolites, and the sparkle of precious stones – both natural and synthetic. Along one wall, exhibits chronicle Earth’s history from the birth of our solar system to the present day, showcasing fascinating fossils along the way. Even outside of opening hours, you can marvel at a large display case in the foyer filled with corals and other reef-building organisms. Nearby, you’ll find a slice of a 1,400-year-old giant sequoia from the USA and the stump of a fossilized Miocene sequoia from a nearby coal mine. The Geomuseum also houses type material for rare minerals like brownmillerite, jasmundite, mayenite, and chlormayenite. This means it holds the original specimens used to describe these minerals, a point of pride for any geological collection. The Geomuseum in Cologne is more than just a museum. It’s a journey through time and a celebration of our planet’s rich history.
