William Bede Dalley P.C. Statue

Amidst the verdant tranquility of Hyde Park stands the William Bede Dalley P.C. Statue. It’s a tribute to a man who, despite humble beginnings, rose to become a prominent figure in Australian politics. The William Bede Dalley P.C. Statue, often called “The Green Man” due to its oxidized bronze patina, captures Dalley in his signature buttoned coat, a testament to his distinct style. Unveiled in April 1897 by Lord Hampton, the statue is a life-sized bronze figure, a product of the “lost wax” casting method, a technique dating back to the Renaissance. The William Bede Dalley P.C. Statue stands proudly on a polished granite pedestal, atop a tiered stone base, a fitting platform for a man of such stature. Born in Sydney in 1831 to Irish convict parents, Dalley’s journey was marked by both triumph and tragedy. His eloquence propelled him to a successful career in law and politics, serving as a representative for Sydney City and Cumberland Boroughs. He even traveled to England in 1861 with Henry Parkes as a commissioner of emigration. Returning to Sydney, Dalley became a leading criminal defense lawyer, notably representing Henry James O’Farrell, the man who attempted to assassinate Prince Alfred. In 1872, Dalley married Eleanor Long, an Anglican, a union that caused friction within the Catholic community. Eleanor’s death from typhoid in 1881 left Dalley devastated and with six young children to care for. He later returned to politics, becoming Attorney General of New South Wales in 1875 and earning the title of Queen’s Counsel in 1877. A man of impeccable taste, Dalley was known for his colorful cravats and buttonholes, his jovial nature, and his fondness for addressing friends and acquaintances as “old boy.” William Bede Dalley’s life ended on October 28, 1888, at his Darling Point home. His legacy, however, lives on through the William Bede Dalley P.C. Statue, a symbol of his remarkable journey. The statue is more than just bronze and granite. It’s a window into the life of a man who contributed significantly to the shaping of Australia’s legal and political landscape. The William Bede Dalley P.C.
