Over four hundred thousand books. That’s a lot of stories isn’t it? Right here before you stands the Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek der Stadt Trier. This isn’t just any library. This is a treasure trove a repository of history. It holds the whispers of centuries past within its walls.

The Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek der Stadt Trier boasts a history as rich as its collection. Its roots trace back to the library of the Trier Jesuit college founded in 1560. Imagine ten thousand volumes carefully catalogued. A testament to scholarship and faith. This collection served Trier’s old university. It nurtured the minds of countless students. Think of the quiet hours spent poring over ancient texts.

In 1722 a separate library was established for the law and medicine faculties. This too eventually joined the Jesuit library’s holdings in 1773. Following the university’s closure in 1798. The library was reborn as the library of the central school of the Saar department. In 1804 it finally took on its current identity the Stadtbibliothek Trier.

The library’s collection grew significantly after secularization in 1802. The books and manuscripts from monasteries and foundations were added to the collection. Think of the monks and their tireless dedication to knowledge. Now their work is part of this incredible legacy.

Since 1894 the Trier city archives have shared space and staff with the library. The library wasn’t always at this location. The current building a striking five-story structure was built from 1955 to 1960. It’s architect was Alfons Leitl. The building houses a vast magazine and a stunning funnel-shaped reading room. This reading room was even used as a city council chamber until 1968.

But what about the mystery? Did you know that the Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek der Stadt Trier once held what was thought to be Friedrich Schiller’s last pen? A cherished relic. It was even displayed in a showcase until its mysterious disappearance in 1984. It had last been seen in 1954. Where did it go? Did someone take it? Or did this treasured artifact become mislaid within the labyrinthine shelves of the library? The mystery remains unsolved.

Today the Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek der Stadt Trier’s treasure trove is beautifully displayed. The newly renovated treasure chamber reopened in 2014. It houses priceless medieval and early modern books and manuscripts. Among these treasures are the Carolingian Ada Gospel book the Trier Apocalypse and the Ottonian Codex Egberti. The Codex Egberti is listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
