Overlooking Chai Wan, Lei Yue Mun, and Kowloon East sits the Cape Collinson Chinese Permanent Cemetery. It’s a place of quiet contemplation, a sprawling necropolis covering nearly 198,000 square meters. The Cape Collinson Chinese Permanent Cemetery opened its gates in 1963. It was established by The Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries. This statutory body manages several key cemeteries across Hong Kong. Don’t let the name fool you. “Permanent” refers to the cemetery’s location, not the graves themselves. Like all land in Hong Kong, the cemetery operates under a lease, set to expire in 2036. The cemetery expanded in 1973, accommodating the growing needs of the community. Within its grounds, you’ll find not only traditional burial plots but also three columbaria, offering a resting place for ashes. Among those interred at Cape Collinson Chinese Permanent Cemetery are notable figures like Chung Chi-yung. He was an educator who co-founded and led Shue Yan College, later Shue Yan University. He also served as a judge. Choi Park Lai, a respected almanacist, also rests here. Another notable burial is Lam Sheung Yee, an international footballer, educator, and football commentator. Shum Wai Yau, the journalist who founded Wah Kiu Yat Po, is also laid to rest within these grounds. The Cape Collinson Chinese Permanent Cemetery stands as a testament to the lives lived and legacies left behind. It is a serene space where the past and present intertwine, offering a place of remembrance and reflection amidst the bustling city.
