What a striking sight this orange and white tower is. It stands tall against the skyline. This is the Tokorozawa Transmitter Site. It’s not quite in Tokyo itself. It sits three kilometers from the city’s border. The Tokorozawa Transmitter Site is part of a larger US military communication base. The Tokorozawa Communications Station.
This site wasn’t always a communication base. It holds a significant place in Japanese aviation history. Back in 1911 it became the site of Japan’s first military airfield. On April 5th Captain Yoshitoshi Tokugawa made the first flight from this very airfield. It was a short flight only ten meters high and 800 meters long. But it marked a pivotal moment. Tokorozawa became a center for pilot training and the growth of the Japanese aviation industry.
Before the airfield even existed Japan was already looking to the skies. In 1909 the Provisional Military Balloon Study Group was formed. This group sent officers to France and Germany to learn to fly. They also had to find a suitable location for Japan’s first military airfield. Several locations were considered. However Tokorozawa was chosen due to its good rail connections and suitable topography and climate.
The airfield’s early days were modest. Only four aircraft were initially operated. A Henri Farman a Hans Grade a Blériot and a Wright Flyer. But the Tokorozawa Transmitter Site’s history is more than just planes. It is a testament to ambition and innovation. Even before the first successful flight from this airfield Japan was already experimenting with airships. The Tokorozawa facility took on the role of producing early aircraft and airships and training pilots.
Over time the base expanded. By 1944 it covered a large area. But even this wasn’t large enough for newer and faster aircraft. The focus on pilot training led to the aircraft research and design department being moved to Tachikawa in 1928. After World War II the base continued to be used by US forces. However after many years it was returned to Japanese control.
Today the Tokorozawa Transmitter Site serves as a unique blend of military history and technological advancement. Its past is deeply connected to Japan’s early aviation efforts. Its present focuses on modern communication. Standing before this tower one can’t help but feel a sense of history. A sense of how far Japan has come in its pursuit of aviation and technological progress. A testament to the past and a bridge to a future brimming with communication.
