Picture this: A bustling community nestled between the Don River’s east and west branches. This is Newtonbrook. A place rich in history and brimming with life.

Newtonbrook’s story begins in the early 1800s. Sawmills and gristmills powered by the Don River were its early industries. The Newton Brook Wesleyan Church its spiritual heart. It was named after Reverend Robert Newton a pivotal figure in the community’s early days.

Lieutenant Colonel William S Durie played a significant role. In 1847 he subdivided his Newtonbrook property. This resulted in the creation of Drewry Avenue. Initially called “Pope’s Lane” it attracted many Catholic families. Only one house from that original subdivision the Rueter House at 270 Drewry Avenue still stands. It’s a silent testament to Newtonbrook’s past.

The 1950s brought massive residential development. Many landmarks vanished. Two exceptions survived the transformation. The Newtonbrook Schoolhouse built around 1878. The second Newtonbrook General Store dating from approximately 1907. These structures offer a glimpse into the neighborhood’s evolution.

Today Newtonbrook is a vibrant multicultural hub. Persian Mandarin Russian and Korean communities thrive. English remains the most spoken language. Persian and Russian are prominent in Newtonbrook West and East respectively. The area enjoys a higher-than-average income and a strong sense of community.

Notable among Newtonbrook’s residents is Lester B Pearson. He was born at the intersection of Yonge Street and Hendon Avenue. He went on to become Canada’s Prime Minister and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. The North American Life Centre now stands on the site of his birthplace.
