Purity Baptist Church was established in 1947. Fifteen people met in Deacon and Mrs. Johns S. Jackson’s home. They wanted a new fellowship apart from Israel Baptist Church. Deacon Oscar Rhodes extended the invitation to Reverend Henry Gibbs Hockett. He would become the pastor of this new body of Christ.
At a subsequent meeting Reverend Hockett accepted the call. 168 additional members enrolled. The Rev. O. C. Bagby and Rev. Carroll Edwards were commissioned to assist him. Deacon William Colvin suggested the name Purity Baptist Church. Initially they lacked a permanent place for services. Peace Baptist Church offered their facilities. Then Trinidad Church welcomed them to stay as long as they wished.
In 1949 Purity Baptist Church found a temporary shelter. It was located at 1325 Maryland Avenue N.E. The property included two houses a store and a warehouse. Under Pastor Hockett’s leadership the church instituted a strong mission program. On September 1 1968 ground was broken for a new church. The current sanctuary was dedicated on September 14 1969.
Reverend Dr. J. Terry Wingate became pastor in March 1975 after Hockett’s retirement. Under his leadership Purity Baptist Church joined American Baptist Churches USA. The mortgage on the main church sanctuary was liquidated in 1975. In 1983 the Urban Center was completed. Additional properties were purchased and the parking lot surfaced. These facilities enhanced the church’s outreach ministry. In March 2007 a second mortgage burning service was held.
After Pastor Wingate’s passing in April 2001 Rev. Arie L. Mangrum Jr. served as Interim Pastor. Reverend John E. Johnson Jr. became the third pastor in March 2004. Reverend Dr. Robin A.
