Slipping through the rugged terrain, Castle Creek carves its path down Mount St. Helens. Castle Creek isn’t just a stream. This waterway traces its origins to the western slopes of Mount St. Helens, high above, approximately two miles northwest of the crater’s rim. From there, Castle Creek embarks on its journey northwest, eventually meeting the North Fork Toutle River. Imagine the scene on May 18, 1980. The eruption of Mount St. Helens dramatically reshaped the landscape. An avalanche, triggered by the eruption, dammed the South Fork Castle Creek. This event gave birth to Castle Lake, a serene body of water nestled amidst the volcanic landscape. Before 1980, this area was known as Castle Creek Marsh, a testament to how profoundly the eruption transformed the region. The South Fork Castle Creek feeds into Castle Lake, and the lake’s outflow, after a short distance, joins the main course of Castle Creek. This continuous flow of water from the mountain’s slopes, through the lake, and into the creek showcases the interconnectedness of this natural system.
