Across the Pearl River Delta a colossal structure stretches. This is not just any bridge. This is the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. A marvel of engineering it connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan. It is a vital artery in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link wasn’t always a reality. For years Shenzhen was left out of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. The initial plans favoured a single-Y design. Shenzhen’s pleas for inclusion in a double-Y design were unsuccessful. This spurred the idea for a separate link. A dedicated connection between Shenzhen and Zhongshan became a necessity. It eventually found its place in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan. The dream was finally set in motion in 2011.
Construction began in May 2017. It was an ambitious undertaking. The project involved a 6.7 km tunnel. Then came 19 bridges spanning 43 km in total. The longest continuous bridge section measures around 22.5 km. About 15.5 km of that section rises majestically above the sea.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link boasts impressive statistics. Four lanes run in each direction. The maximum speed is a brisk 100 km/h. It links the Guangshen Expressway and Jihe Expressway on the eastern side. It also connects to the Zhongjiang Expressway on the western side. The journey from Shenzhen to Zhongshan now takes less than 30 minutes. A significant reduction from previous travel times.
The opening day arrived on June 30 2024. It was a momentous occasion. Shenzhen immediately established inter-city bus routes to Zhongshan. However initial reports of congestion emerged. Some drivers and passengers experienced significant delays. Some even opted for the older Humen Bridge. Despite the initial hiccups the bridge quickly became a vital part of the region’s infrastructure. Within the first month over three million vehicles crossed the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link.
