Dr Arnaldo. A name that echoes through the grand halls of Sao Paulo’s medical history. Right here, on Avenida Doutor Arnaldo, stands a testament to his vision. A gallery, no less, celebrating the man who brought medical education to this bustling city. Dr Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, born in Campinas in 1867, felt the pull of medicine early. He trained in Rio de Janeiro, as Sao Paulo lacked a medical school at the time. Upon his return, he served at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia, witnessing firsthand the city’s urgent healthcare needs. Dr Arnaldo envisioned a future where Sao Paulo trained its own doctors. He championed the establishment of a local medical school. His persistence paid off in 1912. Rodrigues Alves, then President of the State of Sao Paulo, signed the law creating the Faculdade de Medicina e Cirurgia de Sao Paulo. Dr Arnaldo became its first director. He hand-picked the faculty. He even secured a partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, bringing international expertise and resources to this nascent institution. This partnership led to the construction of a dedicated building on Estrada do Araçá, later renamed Avenida Doutor Arnaldo in his honor. Dr Arnaldo’s legacy extends beyond the university. He directed the Instituto Vacinogênico, combating diseases like smallpox. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, he spearheaded efforts to establish hospitals and mobilize medical professionals. Tragically, Dr Arnaldo’s dedication ultimately cost him his life. He died in 1920 from an infection contracted during a surgery at the Santa Casa. He didn’t live to see the full realization of his dreams. The hospital-escola, now the renowned Hospital das Clínicas, opened in 1944. The medical school became a cornerstone of the Universidade de São Paulo. Here at the Dr Arnaldo gallery, we remember his unwavering commitment to medical education and public health. His vision shaped Sao Paulo’s medical landscape, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to come.
