Picture this A young boy wanders through the woods near Vårby. He stumbles upon a stone. Underneath lies a treasure. A silver treasure. This is the Vårby gravfält.

Vårby gravfält a vast burial ground south of Vårby center holds centuries of history. It’s a significant archaeological site. Around ninety graves are scattered across the land. These are mainly burial mounds. Some are low round stone-lined graves. These are harder to spot. A few are marked by standing stones.

The graves date back to the late Iron Age 550-1050 AD. One mound was investigated in 1925. Grave goods included a Thor’s hammer ring and parts of a comb. This burial dates to the Viking Age. Another grave held a man with remarkably good teeth. No signs of cavities. He lived in the 11th or 12th century. He was 18 to 25 when he died.

But the most famous find at Vårby gravfält is the silver treasure. Discovered in 1871. A boy found it while gathering kindling. The treasure weighed 1.5 kg. It contained pearls necklaces brooches. It even had a large round dress fastener. There were also silver coins from Central Asia. These were made into pendants. The treasure dates to the 10th century.

The name Vårby probably comes from the word ‘guard’. Vårby means ‘the village where the guard was’. Anyone traveling further into Lake Mälaren had to pass through Vårby. The name is also part of the Huddinge municipal coat of arms. The Vårby gravfält stands as a testament to the past. The lives lived and buried there. It shows a time of transition and settlement.
