“Illness washes over the land.” Imagine those words echoing through time as we stand before the 麹町太田姫稲荷神社. This small shrine has a remarkable story. It is woven into the fabric of Tokyo’s history.

麹町太田姫稲荷神社 is a branch shrine. It is thought to come from the larger 太田姫稲荷神社 in Kanda Myojin. Details of its founding are unclear. Yet its purpose is not. People came here seeking healing. They sought relief from illness. This was especially true during times of widespread disease.

Legend says that during the Muromachi period a wife of the 太田道灌 Ōta Dōkan fell ill with smallpox. This was a dreaded disease. Her condition worsened. A friend suggested seeking help. They recommended the Inari Shrine in Yamashiro Province. Now Kyoto. It was known to heal smallpox. Ōta Dōkan prayed there. His wife recovered quickly.

Ōta Dōkan revered the Inari Shrine. Later he enshrined a branch. This was within Edo Castle. Now Tokyo. This act was to protect the castle’s gate.

Later the shrine moved. It relocated to Kanda Myojin. Finally, it arrived here in 麹町. The shrine has been a source of comfort. It offered hope during epidemics and hardship.

The Great Kanto Earthquake devastated the shrine. After reconstruction it was located in Kanda. During this time a candy store supported the shrine. After WWII the shrine moved to its current location.

Today the 麹町太田姫稲荷神社 continues to be cherished. It is a place for the well-being of the community. People pray for recovery from illness. They seek success in business.

Every May a festival occurs here. Priests from Hirakawa Tenmangu Shrine lead the ceremony. 町会 Chokai neighborhood associations participate. They show the community’s support for this sacred place.

As you stand here reflect on the resilience of the human spirit. Consider the enduring power of faith. The 麹町太田姫稲荷神社 represents more than a historical site. It embodies the hopes and prayers of generations. It reminds us of the importance of community in times of adversity.
