Details of its founding are unclear. Yet its purpose is not. People came here seeking healing. They sought relief from illness. This was especially true during times of widespread disease.
Legend says that during the Muromachi period a wife of the 太田道灌 Ōta Dōkan fell ill with smallpox. This was a dreaded disease. Her condition worsened. A friend suggested seeking help. They recommended the Inari Shrine in Yamashiro Province. Now Kyoto. It was known to heal smallpox. Ōta Dōkan prayed there. His wife recovered quickly.
Ōta Dōkan revered the Inari Shrine. Later he enshrined a branch. This was within Edo Castle. Now Tokyo. This act was to protect the castle’s gate.
