“Rumor has it William Benning a retired pirate once roamed these very streets” I began my tour of Benning Ridge. Benning Ridge a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington DC boasts a fascinating history and unique character. It’s situated east of the Anacostia River a location that sets it apart from its neighbors. While surrounded by working-class and low-income communities Benning Ridge stands out as a rather affluent area. Its population is diverse a mix of middle and upper-middle-class white and black residents. In 2015 it was even ranked among the top ten most liberal neighborhoods in the entire city.

Imagine strolling down its streets. You’ll find a variety of housing options. Condos co-ops duplexes and garden apartments are common. Single-family homes like Colonials Dutch Colonials bungalows ramblers Cape Cods Victorians and Tudors add to the neighborhood’s architectural charm.

But Benning Ridge is more than just pretty houses. It offers convenient amenities such as grocery stores. Residents enjoy access to wonderful recreational spaces. Benning Terrace Recreation Center is a hub of activity. Nearby are Fletcher-Johnson Recreation Center Fort Chaplin Park and the prominent Fort Dupont Park. These parks provide opportunities for jogging hiking biking baseball basketball and tennis. In the summer outdoor concerts fill the air with music.

While lacking its own Metro station Benning Ridge benefits from its proximity to the Benning Road Metro Station on the Blue and Silver lines. This makes commuting to other parts of the city easy. The neighborhood is bounded by East Capitol Street NE to the north Benning Road SE to the east Southern Avenue SE to the south and Ridge Road SE to the west.

Benning Ridge’s story is one of contrasts. It’s a neighborhood where affluence and diversity coexist. It’s a place where history whispers in the architecture and where modern life thrives amidst convenient amenities and abundant green spaces. This unique blend of old and new makes Benning Ridge a truly captivating neighborhood to explore. It’s a hidden gem in the heart of Washington DC. A place where the past and present meet in harmony.
