And believe me, this gate has seen it all, from emperors to artists, pilgrims to popes! Now, you might think its name, Porta Settimiana, comes from Emperor Septimius Severus. That’s a good guess! But the truth is, no one knows for sure. Some believe it marked the entrance to his grand baths. Others say it’s linked to a monument nearby, maybe even lost to time. Whatever the reason, the name stuck. Through the centuries, Porta Settimiana has seen its fair share of changes. Pope Nicholas V restored it. Pope Alexander VI rebuilt it, giving it the striking Ghibelline battlements you see today. Later, it even became part of the newer Janiculum Walls. But here’s a curious detail: despite all these makeovers, Porta Settimiana still stands right where it always has. And that, my friends, is a rarity in this ever-evolving city!
