Have you ever wondered what stories the Ruamahanga River whispers as it flows through the Wairarapa? Standing here, on its banks, you can almost hear the echoes of ancient Maori legends and the pulse of its vibrant history. The Ruamahanga River, the largest in the Wairarapa, is not just a waterway, it’s a lifeline, a cultural treasure, and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Maori people.

Imagine being Haunui-a-na-naia, the legendary ancestor who named the Ruamahanga. He was travelling down the river when he found two birds entangled in a snare, a fork of a tree. He ate the birds, gaining energy to continue his journey. This inspired him to name the river “Ruamahanga”, meaning “two forks of the tree” – ‘Rua’ signifying two and ‘mahanga’ representing twin. But the river went beyond simple sustenance for Haunui-a-na-naia, it held a special significance for the local Maori. Its waters became a sacred space, where the whenua (placenta) of newborn babies was buried at a place called “whare kdhanga”. These babies would then be brought to the river for an “orioiri” to be sung for them, a special song composed for children of rank, often referencing genealogy and historical events.

The Ruamahanga continues to flow today, embracing the land and its people. Its waters ripple with the memories of ancient traditions and the vibrant life of the present. It’s a journey through time, a river brimming with stories, waiting to be discovered.
