Can a villa speak? If the walls of the Liceo Artistico could talk, they would spin tales of art, history, and a unique bilingual education. The Liceo Artistico in Zurich isn’t just any school. It’s a public Matura school with a focus on visual arts and a German-Italian immersion program. This makes it a special gem amongst Zurich’s educational institutions. The Liceo Artistico is officially part of Kantonsschule Freudenberg. Yet it possesses its own distinct character. Established in 1986, the school occupies a magnificent villa known as “Dem Schönen” on Parkring 30. This villa has its own rich history. Initially built for Dr. Adolf Friedrich Hommel in two stages between 1898 and 1904, the villa later became property of the Canton of Zurich. Once slated for demolition, it was thankfully saved and renovated. Architect Tilla Theus oversaw the transformation of this grand residence into a vibrant learning space. The Liceo Artistico finally opened its doors to students in 1989. Imagine walking these halls where historical details intertwine with the energy of young artists. The restored, richly painted ballroom serves as a multifunctional auditorium. The sculpture hall in the basement provides a dedicated space for students to explore three-dimensional art.
