Intrigued by a gate? Eigelstein City Gate. It’s not just another gate. It’s one of three surviving gate-castles from Cologne’s medieval wall. Imagine twelve of these impressive structures, each a mini-fortress guarding the city. Eigelstein City Gate controlled the northern route, a path used since Roman times. The very name “Eigelstein” whispers of Roman history. It refers to the pine cone-topped burial monuments that lined this Roman road. Over time, these pine cones became associated with acorns, giving us the name we use today. Look closely at Eigelstein City Gate. Notice the conches, those shell-like niches. They hold relics of Cologne’s past. One displays wreckage from the SMS Köln, a small cruiser sunk in World War I. The other houses a copy of the Kölsche Boor, a symbol of Cologne’s resilience. This figure, clutching the city keys, embodies the spirit of the cabbage farmers who defended the city walls. A peculiar saying is tied to the Kölsche Boor and Eigelstein City Gate. “Hold fast to the Reich, you Cologne farmer, may it fall sweet or sour.” It originates from Emperor Wilhelm II’s visit. This saying bridges Cologne’s free imperial past and its loyalty to the new empire. Eigelstein City Gate has witnessed grand entrances, both triumphant and less so. Maria de Medici passed beneath its arch. Napoleon, too, marched through after conquering the city. Today, the gate echoes with a different kind of energy. Since 1994, it has housed the Offene Jazz Haus Schule. You can even rent the gate for celebrations, adding a touch of history to your festivities.
