Gazing upon these weathered stones, can you hear the echoes of Trieste’s medieval past? These are the mura medievali, the very walls that once embraced and protected this vibrant city. They stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history, whispering tales of ambition, conflict, and resilience. The mura medievali, as documented in a 948 deed, encircled Trieste with protective walls, towers, gates, and smaller posterns. This document, gifting the city to the bishop from King Lothair II, describes a fortified city. Imagine Trieste in the 13th century, a city growing in power and independence. As the city thrived, so did the need for stronger defenses. The mura medievali rose, some 15.5 meters high, a formidable barrier against invaders. Their imposing structure, with a base width of about 2.5 meters narrowing to 1.75 meters at the top, showcased Trieste’s determination. Guelf merlons crowned the walls, offering protection to crossbowmen and patrolling guards. Along the inner side, ogival arches supported walkways and battlements. The Statutes of 1350 reveal the extent of these defenses: 13 gates, two fortified with towers, and 10 additional towers, including the Marci Ramphi or Rampana Tower. Each gate held two keys, entrusted to chosen citizens. Soldiers diligently maintained designated sections of the walls, ensuring their cleanliness and structural integrity. Neglect resulted in hefty fines. The mura medievali bore witness to Trieste’s tumultuous relationship with Venice. Rebellions against Venetian authority led to devastating consequences, including the demolition of sections of the walls in 1285 and 1291. Despite these setbacks, Trieste persevered, rebuilding and strengthening its defenses, a testament to its enduring spirit. Trieste’s walls also offer a glimpse into the lives of its inhabitants. By the mid-18th century, the arches supporting the walkways were adapted into dwellings and shops. The mura medievali stood as guardians until 1749 when Empress Maria Theresa decreed their demolition. While much of the wall has vanished, remnants remain, woven into the fabric of the city. These surviving sections allow us to connect with the past, to imagine the bustling life that once unfolded within their embrace. They serve as a poignant reminder of Trieste’s rich history and its enduring strength.
