High above Newtown’s bustling streets lies Connell Hill. Its name whispers of a rich history a story etched into the very fabric of this inner-west Sydney landmark.

Connell Hill stands as a silent sentinel overlooking a significant portion of what was once Sir Maurice O’Connell’s Camperdown Estate. This sprawling estate was subdivided in 1842. The resulting village O’Connell Town was cleverly positioned on the highest point of the estate. This strategic location offered breathtaking views and a commanding position. The grid-like street plan reflects Sir Maurice’s military background a testament to order and strategic planning.

Imagine the residents of O’Connell Town in the 1840s. Their homes nestled amidst the gently sloping hills. Many of these homes were crafted from locally sourced sandstock bricks. These bricks are a unique feature of the area. Their soft colours and the skillful craftsmanship are visible even today. Some of the surviving timber buildings offer a glimpse into the lives of the artisans and workers who built and inhabited this area. These timber buildings are located primarily on the fringes of O’Connell Town. They contrast with the more substantial brick houses found in the centre of the village.

From Connell Hill one can take in the sight of St Stephen’s Anglican Church. Its majestic spire a defining feature of the Newtown skyline. This architectural gem designed by Edmund Blackett is considered one of the finest examples of colonial Gothic architecture in Sydney. The church’s relocation in 1874 marked a shift in the area’s social standing. It contributed to the gentrification of O’Connell Town.

Connell Hill is more than a viewpoint. It is a silent witness to centuries of transformation. From a carefully planned village to a vibrant modern suburb. It offers a panoramic perspective on the evolution of Newtown. The hill provides a fascinating link to a past that continues to shape the present. Stand here and let the stories of O’Connell Town unfold before your very eyes. Feel the weight of history as you gaze upon the beautiful and complex tapestry of Newtown spread out below.
