Picture this A sprawling landscape of mid-century modern homes nestled amongst rolling hills. This is Hollin Hills a unique neighborhood in Fairfax County Virginia.
Developed in the 1940s by Robert C Davenport and designed by the renowned architect Charles M Goodman Hollin Hills is a marvel of post-war modernist architecture. Each home is uniquely positioned to maximize privacy and breathtaking views. Intentionally chosen sight lines enhance the shared spaces between each structure.
Imagine a time when houses were not cookie-cutter replicas. Goodman designed eight modern unit types with variations in size and features. There were even 15 different combinations. The houses were not just homes they were works of art. Many trees were saved during construction to maintain the natural beauty. Houses were built at angles to ensure the privacy of each resident.
The landscape played a crucial role in the design. Harvard-trained landscape designer Lou “Barney” Voigt initially created plans. After his untimely death other talented designers like Daniel Urban Kiley and Eric Paepcke continued his work. They aimed to harmonise the homes with the natural contours of the land. Today residents can still access these original landscape plans.
Hollin Hills boasts more than 30 acres of parkland spread across seven parks. There’s even a pool a bocce court and a pickleball and tennis club. These are maintained by the Civic Association of Hollin Hills a testament to the community spirit. However the parks have faced challenges. In 2021 Fairfax County closed access for stream restoration projects. After months of work the parks reopened in 2022.
The neighborhood has garnered significant recognition for its architectural and landscape design. It received the Revere Quality House award in 1950. It was also the inaugural awardee of the Test-of-Time Award from the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. In 2013 Hollin Hills was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. In 2022 it received Historic Overlay District designation protecting its unique character.
