Perhaps you have heard of a place called Saltsjö-Boo? Today, we’re exploring Boo, a locality on the island of Värmdö. It is part of the Nacka Municipality in Stockholm County.

Boo boasts a population of over 24000 residents as of 2010. Imagine a place that was once its own municipality. That was Boo until 1970. In 1971, it became part of the Nacka Municipality.

Boo’s history stretches back centuries. Once, the area consisted of separate islands. These islands included Hargsö, Övre Orminge, and Yttre Orminge.

Hargsö’s name appears in records from the 1280s. King Magnus Ladulås donated land in Boo to a Stockholm monastery then. For a long time, Boo remained sparsely populated. It consisted mainly of the farms Boo, Kummelnäs, and Velamsund. There were also smaller holdings.

Gustav Vasa later granted Boo to riksamiral Jakob Bagge. In 1700, Nicodemus Tessin the Younger acquired Boo gård. During the Battle of Stäket in 1719, Russian forces burned the estate down. However, Tessin rebuilt the manor house. It still stands today.

The southern part of Boo is known as Lännersta. It is named after Lännersta gård. This farm dates back to the 1400s. From 1545 to 1829, it was under the control of the Boo estate. The main building and its two wings are still there.

Boo formed its own socken. In 1863, Boo landskommun was established. Since the municipal reform of 1971, Boo has been the eastern part of Nacka Municipality.
