Hidden among Vienna’s green spaces lies Josef-Schoiswohl-Park a tranquil oasis in the 23rd district of Liesing. This small park isn’t just a place for quiet contemplation. It holds a fascinating story.

Before it became Josef-Schoiswohl-Park it was known as Dr-Karl-Lueger-Park. The name change happened on June 4 2002. The Vienna Municipal Council’s Cultural Committee made the decision. They chose to honor Bishop Dr Josef Schoiswohl.

Bishop Schoiswohl a significant figure in Austrian history served as the Bishop of Graz-Seckau from 1954 to 1968. He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Burgenland in 1949. He received his episcopal consecration in 1951. His time as bishop was marked by both conservative beginnings and later progressive reforms following the Second Vatican Council. He even initiated programs where young priests worked in coal mines. This was to engage with working-class communities. His efforts caused tension within the diocese. Eventually he resigned in 1968.

This park named in his honor offers a peaceful setting. It reflects on a life of service and reform. Take a moment to appreciate the quiet beauty. Let the park’s serenity speak of a life dedicated to faith and social justice. Imagine the discussions and decisions made within the walls of the buildings where Bishop Schoiswohl served.

The park’s quiet beauty stands as a testament. It is a fitting memorial to a complex and influential figure. Josef-Schoiswohl-Park isn’t merely a green space. It’s a window into a significant part of Viennese and Austrian history. It’s a place where you can connect with the past while enjoying the tranquility of the present. Enjoy your time in this unexpected corner of Vienna.
