Lost in thought I wandered into Northeast Boundary. This small neighborhood in Washington DC sits nestled in the far northeast. It’s the easternmost neighborhood in fact bordering Prince George’s County Maryland. Think Capitol Heights Fairmount Heights and Seat Pleasant. They are just a stone’s throw away.
Northeast Boundary isn’t just a location. It’s a story of economic development. The District government considers it a policy focus area. This means it gets special attention. Economic development policy planning and zoning are all focused here. Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue is the main retail area. Dix Street between 60th and Eastern Avenue is another retail hub. The government is working hard to boost business there. It’s a relatively poor neighborhood. In 2018 a part of Northeast Boundary even became an Opportunity Zone. This federal program encourages investment in low-income areas.
Imagine walking through Northeast Boundary. You’ll pass H D Woodson High School and Marvin Gaye Park. You’ll see Richardson Dwellings and Lincoln Heights two large public housing complexes. Watts Branch flows through the neighborhood feeding into Watts Branch Park. There’s a baseball field a basketball court a community garden and a playground. In 2018 a new recreation center opened. The Marvin Gaye Recreation Center is a stunning two-story building. It replaced the old Watts Branch Recreation Center. It’s a significant upgrade for the community.
Getting around can be challenging. The hilly terrain and small streets make it difficult for Metrobus. The closest metro station is actually in Maryland. It’s the Capitol Heights station.
