Deep beneath the rugged terrain of Trieste, Italy, lies the mysterious Grotta del Carbone. Its very name, “Coal Cave,” whispers of a time long past. In 1929, the first explorers of the Grotta del Carbone stumbled upon stones bearing traces of coal, giving the cave its intriguing name. The cave’s entrance, a sloping pit once navigated by the villagers of Pese using a wooden ladder during World War II as a refuge, opens beneath the karstic ridge. Descending into the Grotta del Carbone is like stepping into another world. The initial pit opens into a large cavern adorned with stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. A niche on the north side hides a well, its bottom submerged in a perpetual pool of water. At the base of the entrance pit, a muddy, low passage leads to the top of a descending gallery. After about ten meters, past a small chamber with a large, slanted chimney-like formation, the cave continues with a natural slide. This leads into a second chamber. High in this chamber, a small, ascending passage, richly decorated with formations, ends in a narrow opening. This opening breathes air but is impassable. Continuing downwards, bypassing two ascending branches, the cave continues with more slides, reaching a depth of 30 meters. Here, the Grotta del Carbone splits into two branches, both ending in small underground lakes. The west branch is about ten meters long. The south branch, wider, descends through a series of small drops to the cave’s maximum depth of 51 meters. The cave itself stretches 170 meters horizontally.
