HARUMI FLAG SUN VILLAGE stands on the former site of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Village. The Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in 2021. This was a year later than planned because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Occupancy of the condominiums began on January 19, 2024.
Imagine this area bustling with athletes. Then picture it transforming into a vibrant residential community. HARUMI FLAG is an urban development project. It spans approximately 18 hectares. It includes 24 buildings. There are 5,632 condominiums and rental units. Commercial facilities are here too.
The location has an interesting history. It was once the Tokyo International Trade Fair grounds. The Cabinet approved a bid for the 2016 Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic main stadium was planned for this site. However, the 2016 Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro. Japan reworked its bid to host the 2020 Olympics. The plan for the site changed to the development of the Olympic Village.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government initiated the Harumi 5-chome West District Urban Redevelopment Project in March 2015. The goal was to build the Olympic Village. It would serve as a legacy after the event. The Bureau of Urban Development supervised the development of roads and other infrastructure. Private funds constructed the residential and commercial facilities. Construction began in 2017. It was completed in December 2019.
Interior renovation occurred after the Games. Occupancy was scheduled to begin in March 2023. The pandemic postponed the Games and occupancy by a year. Once complete, the complex will house approximately 12,000 people. This makes it the largest condominium complex in Japan.
