Centuries ago, a ship brimming with silks and spices from the Orient approached Venice. But instead of docking at the bustling port, it was directed towards an isolated island in the lagoon: Lazzaretto Nuovo. Lazzaretto Nuovo was no ordinary island. It was a sentinel, a gatekeeper against a silent, invisible enemy: the plague. Established in 1468, Lazzaretto Nuovo became Venice’s first line of defense. Ships arriving from far-off lands were required to stop here. Their crews and passengers were quarantined for forty days, a period the Venetians called “quarantena.” This practice gave us the word “quarantine” that we still use today. While people were confined, their goods were meticulously inspected and cleansed in a massive warehouse called the Tezon Grande. Imagine the Tezon Grande, one of Venice’s largest buildings, filled with bolts of silk, sacks of spices, and crates of exotic goods. Workmen, known as bastazi, treated these treasures with aromatic herbs like juniper and rosemary, hoping to banish any trace of the plague. The island itself was a microcosm of Venetian society. Individual rooms with kitchens and bathrooms were provided, a testament to Venice’s advanced understanding of sanitation. As the quarantined inhabitants waited, they left their mark on the walls of the Tezon Grande. Graffiti, drawings, and inscriptions from the 16th and 17th centuries still whisper their stories. Names of doges, merchants, and sailors intertwine with symbols and seals, a poignant reminder of the lives touched by this island. Lazzaretto Nuovo’s role as a quarantine station diminished in the 18th century. Yet, its story continued. The island was repurposed as a military outpost by the French and later the Austrians. Today, as you stand before Lazzaretto Nuovo, imagine the ghosts of those quarantined souls. Hear the echoes of the bastazi at work. The whispers of history, etched into the very walls, remind us of Venice’s ingenuity and resilience in the face of an unrelenting enemy. Lazzaretto Nuovo stands as a powerful symbol of a city that dared to confront the darkness and protect its future.
