The District of Columbia International Public Charter School opened in 2014. It was born from the collaboration of five elementary schools. Each of these schools specialized in language immersion. They joined forces to provide a pathway for their students to continue their language studies through high school. This innovative approach was unprecedented. It ensured students could seamlessly continue their immersion in Spanish French or Chinese.
The school’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Initially housed in temporary facilities it eventually found a permanent home. In 2017 the school moved into the Delano Hall building. This is a historic building part of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center. It’s a stunning transformation for this former nurses’ dormitory. Now it provides space for up to 1450 students.

The student body comprises roughly 40% African-American 40% Hispanic and 15% Caucasian students. A significant portion of the students are English language learners. All students participate in a language immersion program. They can even earn the IB Bilingual Diploma.
