Holy Trinity Church was established in 1787. It holds the distinction of being the oldest Catholic Church in the entire city. Initially, due to legal uncertainties surrounding Catholic churches, it was humbly referred to as “Georgetown Chapel”. This name stuck for several years after its completion in 1794.
The church’s founding father, Archbishop John Carroll, played a pivotal role in shaping the Catholic landscape of America. As the first Catholic bishop in America and a cousin of Charles Carroll, a Declaration of Independence signer, his influence was profound. He, along with four dedicated lay trustees—Adam King, George King, George Fenwick, and James Simpson—laid the foundation for a thriving community. The original structure faced south and proudly featured a bell tower. It served as a spiritual haven for Georgetown’s growing Catholic population. It also catered to the students of Georgetown College, now the esteemed Georgetown University.
Holy Trinity Church has been a silent observer of pivotal moments in American history. The current church building, dedicated in 1851, replaced the original structure that now serves as the Chapel of St. Ignatius. During the Civil War, the church was transformed into a hospital. It provided care for over 200 wounded soldiers after the Second Battle of Bull Run in 1862. Even President John F. Kennedy, a devout Catholic, frequently worshipped within these hallowed walls. His presence is commemorated by a plaque outside the church. More recently, it served as a place of worship for prominent figures. These included Vice President, and later President, Joe Biden, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Holy Trinity Church also boasts a rich history intertwined with its cemeteries. The original 1787 cemetery, located on the present church site, held the remains of hundreds of individuals. Some of these remains were unearthed as late as 1998 during construction. Its College Ground cemetery, established in 1818, became the final resting place for notable figures. One is Susan Decatur, wife of naval hero Stephen Decatur. She played a crucial role in saving Georgetown University from financial ruin with a generous donation in 1837.
