“Connecting futures” could be the motto of the Shin Tatsumi Bridge. This bridge links Tokyo’s 江東区, specifically the 南小岩六丁目 on the east bank with 上一色二丁目 on the west. But it does so much more.

Welcome to the 新辰巳橋 or Shin Tatsumi Bridge. It is not just a way to cross the 新中川 River. It’s a landmark. The bridge stands as a testament to the city’s constant evolution.

Originally built in 1956, during the 新中川 River canal project, the first 新辰巳橋 lacked sidewalks. Cars and pedestrians shared the road. As traffic increased a sidewalk was added in 1968.

By the early 1990s the bridge was showing its age. Increased traffic and a narrow width made it necessary to build a new bridge. As part of 江戸川区’s 新中川 bridge improvement plan, the current Shin Tatsumi Bridge was completed in 1993.

Look at its design. The 新辰巳橋 boasts a basket handle shaped Nielsen-Lohse bridge form. It stretches 120.3 meters long with a maximum span of 118.8 meters. The bridge is 15 meters wide. The roadway takes up 7 meters and the sidewalks 4 meters each. The steel structure weighs 1598 tons.

The design concept is called Dialogue with the City. It acts as a landmark for the 小岩 area. Its arch motif gives a light impression. It blends the waterfront with the surrounding area.

From the 新辰巳橋, you can see the gentle arch. It stands out. It enhances the cityscape. People often stop to take photos.

Once the bridge was illuminated at night. It created a beautiful night scene. However, to conserve energy, the lights are currently off.

The wide sidewalks are equipped with plants and benches. This allows people to enjoy seasonal flowers. In summer people gather to view the evening cool and 江戸川 fireworks. Locals come here to stroll.

The 新辰巳橋 has appeared in many TV dramas. These include TBS’s “Beautiful Life” and “White Shadow”. Also Fuji Television’s “Dokk” and “Marumo’s Story”. It is a popular filming location.

Nearby, you’ll find 小岩 Station on the JR Sobu Main Line. Also close are 下小岩 Second Elementary School and 上一色 community center.

So as you cross the 新辰巳橋, remember its history. Appreciate its design. Think of the many stories it has silently witnessed. This bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It is a vital part of the community. It reflects Tokyo’s ever-changing spirit.
