Perhaps it’s the allure of a remote escape that draws you to Raukawa Hut. This hut is nestled in the heart of Remutaka Forest Park. It offers a unique experience for those seeking a tranquil retreat.
Raukawa Hut is not just any shelter. It is a serviced 14-bunk lodge. The Department of Conservation maintains it. You must book it in advance to get access. It’s a popular spot, so plan ahead.
The adventure begins with a two-hour walk via the Orongorongo Track. But there’s a twist. The track doesn’t lead directly to the hut. A 10-minute walk from Turere Bridge is needed to reach the hut. You will have wet feet. The hut is on a river terrace on the east side of the Orongorongo River.
To get to Raukawa Hut, follow the markers downstream for about 250 meters. You will pass the Tararua Tramping Club hut. Raukawa Lodge is clearly marked with a large orange triangle. You will see it in the bush from the river.
Before crossing the Orongorongo River, check its flow. Flash floods are common. Avoid crossing if the river is flooded. Sustained rainfall in the area is also a danger sign.
Watch for warning signs. These signs include water flowing faster than walking pace, discolored water, and debris in the river. The sound of rocks rolling in the river bed is also a bad sign. If unsure, don’t risk it. Wait for the river to drop or change your plans.
Raukawa Hut provides gas cooking, crockery, pots, and cooking utensils. There is wood heating with wet back for a hot shower. Cold tap water and a flush toilet are also available. Remember to bring candles or torches for lighting, matches or a lighter, and toilet paper.
The fees for Raukawa Hut are for up to 14 people. Off-peak rates are $155 per night. Peak rates are $185 per night. Bookings are essential all year round.
