Hidden within the Kam Tin area lies Shui Tau Tsuen. This 17th-century village holds a rich history. It whispers tales of the Tang Clan, one of Hong Kong’s Five Great Clans. Shui Tau Tsuen is more than just ancient stones and weathered wood. It’s a living testament to tradition and perseverance. It’s a place where the echoes of scholars preparing for imperial examinations still linger. Imagine young men striving for official positions, their futures hanging on their performance. The weight of their families’ hopes rested on their shoulders. Shui Tau Tsuen housed several significant structures. So Lau Yuen stands as a testament to the Tang clan’s dedication to education. Built in the late 18th century by Tang Kuen-hin, it prepared young clansmen for the civil service exams. The walls of So Lau Yuen whisper stories of success. Numerous descendants of Tang Kuen-hin passed the rigorous examinations during the reigns of Qianlong and Daoguang. One standout is Tang Ming-hok, Tang Kuen-hin’s second son, who achieved a sixth-rank official position. His success inspired him to build Cheung Chun Yuen, a school dedicated to martial arts training for those pursuing military examinations. This was the sole place in Kam Tin offering such specialized instruction. The village also boasts the Yi Tai Study Hall. Known for its simple elegance and white stone forecourt, students who studied there earned the moniker “Students of White Stone Lane.” Shui Tau Tsuen’s architectural treasures extend beyond study halls. The village shares a unique feature with its neighbor, Shui Mei Tsuen: prow-shaped roofs adorned with dragons and carp. These intricate details showcase the rich artistry of the region. While some buildings, like So Lau Yuen, are no longer open to the public, their presence still resonates within the village. Shui Tau Tsuen remains a captivating blend of history and modern life. It is a place where the whispers of the past intertwine with the rhythm of the present.
