Here stands Riddarholmsbroarna a bronze sculpture. It tells a story. A story of bridges spanning centuries. Riddarholmsbroarna isn’t just art. It’s a living testament to Stockholm’s history.

Riddarholmen and Stadsholmen. Two islands connected by bridges for ages. The earliest was a simple wooden structure. It led from Gråmunketornet the Greyfriars Tower. Riddarholmen was then Gråmunkeholmen. The bridge was called Munkbron the Friars Bridge.

Later a drawbridge appeared in 1630. Councillor Åke Tott built it. It linked his estate to the House of Knights. This bridge lasted only fifteen years. Imagine the bustling activity. Carts horses people crossed it daily.

After a devastating fire in 1697 both bridges were widened. The Royal Family resided on Riddarholmen. The Wrangel Palace became their temporary home. They needed easy access.

Then came a grander bridge. Architect Erik Palmstedt designed it in 1784. It was a stone arch bridge. It was a testament to Gustav III’s return from Italy. A memorial slate was added. It proclaimed Sweden’s restored happiness.

This stone marvel didn’t last. The railroad’s arrival demanded its demolition in 1867. A cast iron bridge replaced it. Its spans were steeper and longer. The trains needed clearance.

The post war era brought more traffic. The metro arrived. The cast iron bridge was inadequate. Demolition followed. Temporary bridges were used for six years. Finally in 1958 the current concrete bridge rose. It’s a closed frame structure. It is thirteen and a half meters wide.

But a part of the old Palmstedt bridge lives on. Architect Ragnar Östberg cleverly preserved a vault. It now resides in the Stockholm City Hall gardens. It is known as Palmstedts grotta Palmstedt’s cave. It’s a hidden treasure a reminder of the past.

Riddarholmsbroarna captures all this. The sculpture shows the evolution of these vital links. It stands as a symbol of Stockholm’s enduring spirit. It’s a reminder of the city’s constant transformation. The bridges changed. Stockholm thrived. This sculpture celebrates that.
