Rescued from the brink of extinction how many penguins have been saved? Welcome to SANCCOB the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. SANCCOB isn’t just a name it’s a lifeline for countless seabirds. It all began in 1968 after the Esso Essen oil spill. Althea Louise Burman Westphal saw the devastation firsthand. She established a temporary rehabilitation center in her own home. This act of bravery birthed SANCCOB. The organization grew rapidly. More and more seabirds needed help. SANCCOB has since cared for over 85000 seabirds. Think about that for a moment. That’s thousands of lives saved. It wasn’t just penguins. SANCCOB works tirelessly with a variety of species. They’ve aided Cape gannets cormorants and many more. These birds face numerous threats. Oil spills are devastating. In 2000 the Treasure spill forced SANCCOB to evacuate 19500 un-oiled birds. This was a significant portion of the global population. Beyond crises SANCCOB addresses everyday challenges. Injury illness abandonment are all reasons birds end up in their care. SANCCOB’s work extends beyond rescue and rehabilitation. They’re actively involved in research and conservation efforts. This includes working with government agencies research institutions and other conservation organizations. They strive to tackle threats like habitat loss overfishing and pollution. Community engagement is also crucial. SANCCOB carries out extensive educational programs. They raise awareness about the plight of these incredible birds. They ensure future generations understand the importance of conservation. SANCCOB has two centers one in Cape Town and another in Gqeberha. The Cape Town facility boasts surgical theaters intensive care units and aviaries. Here rehabilitation and recovery are prioritized. The focus is on ensuring these birds can return to their natural homes. SANCCOB’s dedication is extraordinary. It is a beacon of hope for seabirds in Southern Africa. Their tireless efforts highlight the power of human compassion and commitment to conservation. SANCCOB proves that even the smallest act of kindness can make a world of difference. This organization is a shining example of how we can work together to protect our precious wildlife for generations to come. Remember SANCCOB. Remember the incredible work they do for our oceans. Remember the countless lives they’ve saved.
