He shared his dream with three friends Altayewerq Berhaneselassie Seifu Metaferia and Deacon Negusie Woldemariam. Their combined efforts led to the church’s registration as a 501c3 organization. They secured tax-exempt status under DC law.
After a decade in a rented hall Debre Selam found its permanent home in 1997. It now occupies almost an entire block. The church’s influence extends far beyond its walls. It’s a center for the Metropolitan Washington Clergy Association. It participates in various religious and philanthropic activities.
Debre Selam played a crucial role in organizing the first ever Feast of the Finding of the True Cross celebration in 2018. This unprecedented event involved numerous parish churches. They even obtained permission for a bonfire in Rhino Park. The tradition was followed to honor the symbolic significance of the feast.
The church’s commitment to its community is unwavering. It baptizes infants administers holy matrimony and conducts memorial services. Sunday services are held each week. Many services are livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube. This ensures broader participation from members who cannot attend in person.
Debre Selam’s Sunday school boasts over a hundred adult students. They engage in Bible classes led by the church’s evangelism department. The church focuses strongly on the spiritual and moral growth of children. More than 500 children receive religious instruction weekly.

It supports organizations like “Tserha Tsion Society” and “Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia”. Many Archbishops archpriests and dignitaries from Ethiopia have visited. Debre Selam has assisted them in fundraising for their diocesan initiatives back home.
