Can you imagine a sewage pumping station winning a platinum rating for green building? Right here at the DSD Heung Yuen Wai Sewage Pumping Station, that’s exactly what happened. This isn’t your typical pumping station. The DSD Heung Yuen Wai Sewage Pumping Station is a vital part of the new Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point. It connects Hong Kong’s New Territories to Shenzhen East. This single-story building treats sewage from the Boundary Control Point and the relocated Chuk Yuen Village. The DSD Heung Yuen Wai Sewage Pumping Station is designed to be unmanned. The Drainage Services Department remotely controls its operations from the Shek Wu Hui Sewage Treatment Works in Sheung Shui. They use a SCADA remote monitoring system, keeping a close watch on everything. What makes this pumping station so green? It’s designed with sustainability in mind, from the recycled materials used in construction to the solar panels generating power. A remarkable 68% of the exterior surfaces utilize recycled materials. A whopping 89% of the building materials come from within 800km of Hong Kong. The station boasts high-efficiency AC systems and LED lighting, resulting in a 19% annual energy saving. This translates to 26,130kWh per year, equivalent to 18.2 tonnes less CO2 emission. Adding to its green credentials, solar panels cover an area equal to 21% of the building’s footprint. Water efficiency is another key feature. Low-flow fixtures save 38% of potable water annually. They also reduce sewage volume by 52%. Even the wastewater is recycled for irrigation. This eliminates the need for potable water for this purpose. Leakage sensors stand guard, ready to alert staff of any potential water loss. The DSD Heung Yuen Wai Sewage Pumping Station achieves a “Good” rating for indoor air quality, minimizing VOCs, formaldehyde, and radon. The DSD Heung Yuen Wai Sewage Pumping Station truly exemplifies a commitment to sustainable development, proving that even essential infrastructure can be environmentally friendly. It serves as a model for future sewage treatment plants, demonstrating the power of innovation and green practices.
