Established in 1608, Tokuun-in Temple stands as a testament to the devotion of Lady Junshoin, a consort of Shogun Hidetada Tokugawa. The temple, known as Tokuun-in, is located in Taito Ward, Tokyo. It was originally built within the grounds of the expansive Koenji Temple in Edo (modern-day Chiyoda Ward). Lady Junshoin, also known as Matsudaira no Tsubone, commissioned Tokuun-in Temple. Her influence with the Tokugawa family facilitated its construction. This act of piety demonstrates the close relationship between the Tokugawa shogunate and Buddhist institutions. Tokuun-in Temple served as one of the sub-temples associated with Koenji Temple. The Tokugawa family supported Koenji Temple by sending three people annually to assist with its upkeep. Tokuun-in was later relocated to its current location in Taito Ward, Tokyo, in 1635, along with Koenji Temple. This move occurred during the early Edo period, marking a significant shift in the temple’s history. Today, Tokuun-in Temple serves as a place of worship. It also offers a glimpse into the past. The temple’s name, Tokuun-in, honors its founder, Lady Junshoin. Her legacy lives on through this serene sanctuary. The temple’s architecture and serene atmosphere invite contemplation. Visitors can reflect on the historical significance of this enduring symbol of devotion.
