From a humble beginning on Nathan Road, St. Clare’s Girls’ School blossomed into the respected institution you see today. In 1927, the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Angels, hailing from Canada, embarked on a mission to educate Hong Kong’s girls. Their first classroom, a rented flat on bustling Nathan Road, held only seven students. The school, named after St. Clare, adopted the motto “Veritas Vincit,” meaning “Truth Conquers.” St. Clare’s Girls’ School quickly outgrew its initial space. The sisters relocated, first to Peace Avenue, then to Argyle Street, both in Homantin. Seeking a stronger connection with the local community, the school eventually found a home in Kennedy Town, opening in Sands Street in 1930. St. Clare’s Girls’ School faced a major disruption with the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War. Some sisters sought refuge in Macau, while a few remained, bravely continuing to teach some students in secret throughout the occupation. After the war, St. Clare’s Girls’ School adapted to a new education system. The school ran a morning session for secondary students under a government grant and an afternoon session for primary students as a private school. The dream of a dedicated primary school became a reality in 1950. The relentless growth of St. Clare’s Girls’ School, under the leadership of headmistress Sister Elizabeth of Portugal, led to the acquisition of a new site on Mount Davis Road. This new campus, where we stand now, officially opened its doors on November 28, 1959. The school’s current location stands as a testament to its enduring commitment to education.
