Gazing at Trail Marker 6, can you envision the monumental task of shaping a nation’s capital? Trail Marker 6, weathered and worn, stands as a silent testament to the ambitious survey that defined the boundaries of Washington D.C.. The Residence Act of 1790 set in motion the creation of a new capital. Land from Maryland and Virginia was carved into a diamond, ten miles on each side. Each mile was marked by a boundary stone, like Trail Marker 6. These stones, placed in 1791 and 1792, are the oldest federally placed monuments in the United States. The surveyors, led by Major Andrew Ellicott, worked clockwise. They started at Jones Point and meticulously placed each stone, including Trail Marker 6. Each stone, including Trail Marker 6, was inscribed with “Jurisdiction of the United States” on one side and “Maryland” or “Virginia” on the other. The year of placement and the distance from the initial stone at Jones Point were also marked. Trail Marker 6 has witnessed the evolution of D.C.. The city’s boundaries have shifted over time. This has left many of these markers in unexpected places, like sidewalks and front yards. Some, like Trail Marker 6, have even been damaged by cars or buried during construction projects, only to be rediscovered later. The Daughters of the American Revolution stepped in to protect these historic stones. They erected iron fences around them, shielding them from the elements and accidental damage. But even these protective measures haven’t always been enough. Despite the challenges, Trail Marker 6 persists. It stands as a reminder of the vision and effort that went into creating the nation’s capital. It symbolizes the enduring legacy of a survey that shaped not only a city but a nation. Trail Marker 6 is a tangible link to the very foundations of Washington D.C..
