This very spot was once part of the grand Palais Schwarzenberg’s gardens. The Palais Schwarzenberg, rising before you in all its Baroque splendor, has a fascinating history. It began life in 1697 as a project of Heinrich Franz Graf von Mansfeld. Sadly, he died before its completion. The unfinished palace found a new owner in 1716, Prince Adam Franz of Schwarzenberg. He entrusted its completion to renowned architects Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and his son, Joseph Emanuel. Finished in 1728, the Palais Schwarzenberg boasts a magnificent marble gallery, the Marmorgalerie. It even served as a luxurious hideout for James Bond in the film “The Living Daylights”. Though currently closed for refurbishment, the Palais Schwarzenberg remains a testament to Vienna’s grand past. Its history is intertwined with powerful families, architectural brilliance, and even a touch of Hollywood glamour.
