Beneath the serene facade of Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward lies a sanctuary of spiritual history. Welcome to Tozenji Temple. This temple whispers tales of a past stretching back centuries. Tozenji Temple is a Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect. It is formally known as Kinrinzan Myoryoin Tozenji.
Founded in 1444 Tozenji Temple holds a special place in the hearts of locals and history enthusiasts alike. A priest named Shuon founded it. He was a follower of Asakusa Temple. Circle Enlightenment founded the temple again. An 11-day ascetic practice is described in “New Compiled Musashi Topography”.
Originally a modest wooden structure Tozenji Temple has evolved. In 1963 the temple was rebuilt with reinforced concrete. However it retains its deep connection to the past. Its principal image is Amitabha Tathagata. You can also find the statues of Yakushi Buddha and Fudo Myoo. There are also statues of Ksitigarbha and Senju Kannon. These two statues mark the 7th and 8th of Katsushika. There are also statues of Nyoirin Kannon and Daikokuten.
Within the temple grounds stands the grave of Jakuchu Itou. He was a doctor of the Tokugawa Ieyasu family. Jakuchu Itou was also known as Joshun Itakura. His tombstone stands alongside a Hokushu pagoda. This pagoda serves as a road sign dating back to 1763.
Tozenji Temple is also home to a number of stone monuments. Among these is the Rokujizo statue dating back to 1444. A Hokkekyo reading tower from 1780 also stands here. There is also a statue of Mizuko Jizo built in 1980.
What makes Tozenji Temple particularly special is its integration into community life. The temple hosts various events throughout the year. A session to correct oneself is held on January 1st. A bean scattering ceremony is held in February. A memorial service is held on February 15th. A spring equinox service is held in March. On April 8th there is a flower festival. A feeding demon meeting takes place on May 4th. A mountain family association is held on June 4th. On June 24th there is a lecture for the Northern Ksitigarbha. In July the Bon Festival is held. An autumn equinox service is held in September. A Tendai meeting is held on November 24th.
