Gazing at the bustling platforms of Chai Wan Station, can you imagine this spot once housed a quiet minibus terminus and a portion of Chai Wan Park? Chai Wan Station, the easternmost stop on Hong Kong’s MTR Island line, has a unique history. Opened in 1985, it stands as the only elevated station on the Island Line. Chai Wan Station serves the vibrant areas of Siu Sai Wan and Chai Wan. It acts as a crucial transport hub, connecting commuters to the residential and industrial heart of Chai Wan. The station’s construction, starting in July 1982, involved innovative engineering by the British firm George Wimpey. They used hand-dug caissons for the foundation and poured over 11,000 cubic meters of concrete to create this robust structure. Before the South Island line’s Lei Tung station opened in 2016, Chai Wan Station held the title of Hong Kong’s southernmost railway station. An interesting quirk of Chai Wan Station lies in its dual platforms for Kennedy Town-bound trains. A display board guides passengers to the platform with the next departing train. While an overrun track exists for trains to reverse beyond the station, it’s seldom used. Trains usually depart from the same platform they arrive on. Observe the activity during off-peak hours. You might witness Island Line trains concluding their service here before returning to the nearby Chai Wan Depot. A series of signals and announcements alerts passengers about these non-passenger-carrying trains. The destination display changes to “Depot,” and platform indicators confirm that the train won’t board passengers. This station embodies Chai Wan’s transformation from a collection of villages to a modern hub. The name Chai Wan itself means “firewood bay,” hinting at its past rich in firewood production. From its humble beginnings as “Sai Wan” or “West Bay” to its current status as a bustling transport center, Chai Wan Station reflects the area’s dynamic evolution.
