Three bells chime a centuries-old melody. This is Petrská věž in Prague. It stands tall a late Gothic testament to time. More than just a bell tower it’s a vital part of Prague’s New Town.

Built near the Church of St Peter the tower’s design mirrors Italian campaniles. Its construction a surprisingly long process began 150 years after the foundation’s excavation. The consecration finally occurred in 1598. The tower has seen much change. It initially belonged to the Calvinists then the Lutherans. After the Battle of White Mountain it became property of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star.

Petrská věž has endured hardship. In 1648 during the Thirty Years’ War it suffered significant damage. The tower even burned twice in the late 17th century. Archbishop Váldštejn initiated its Baroque restoration. A new cupola-shaped roof was added. He also gifted a new bell christened Peter. This bell so large needed recasting in the early 18th century by the master bellmaker M Löw.

Today Petrská věž houses three bells. The largest Peter is a magnificent 122 cm tall with a 166 cm diameter. Its reliefs depict St Peter the New Town coat of arms and names of contemporary officials. Pavel another bell cast in 1724 by Zachariáš Dietrich features St Paul and the New Town’s emblem. Jan Křtitel the third bell lost during wartime was recast in 1833 by Bellmann.

An observation deck is found at the tower’s highest point. Clocks adorn its walls. An inscription in Latin proudly proclaims its construction in 1598 by the parish of St Peter at Poříčí thanks to public and private funding.

A fascinating detail Petrská věž was a favorite spot for the renowned Czech poet K H Mácha. He once climbed above the bell chamber. Unfortunately he fell injuring himself. A scar above his eyebrow and below his eye remained a lasting reminder of his daring climb.

Petrská věž is more than just a structure. It’s a living monument. A silent witness to Prague’s rich history and a reminder of the enduring spirit of the city.
