Naenae College

Nestled in the heart of Lower Hutt, Naenae College has been a cornerstone of the community since its inception in 1953. Originally built to accommodate the burgeoning student population from the Naenae state housing development, Naenae College stands proudly, not in Naenae itself, but in the neighboring suburb of Avalon. This sprawling institution occupies a substantial 12-hectare site, a testament to its significance in the educational landscape of Wellington. Naenae College was a prototype for a standardized school design that was intended to be replicated across New Zealand. The design featured two-story classroom wings flanking long corridors. The ground floor was constructed from reinforced concrete, while the upper level utilized timber. This “Naenae type school,” however, proved too costly and time-consuming to roll out on a larger scale. It was subsequently superseded by the single-story, all-timber “Henderson type school.” Interestingly, both these designs were relatively short-lived, phased out in 1957 in favor of self-contained classroom blocks. Naenae College has a rich history of serving diverse learners. The school boasts a roll of 818 students from Years 9 to 13. It embraces co-education and serves as a state school under the authority of the Ministry of Education. Naenae College holds the distinction of being one of the beneficiaries of the free school lunch program, a government initiative aimed at supporting low-decile schools across New Zealand. The college has faced financial challenges in the past. In 2019, the Ministry of Education significantly reduced a substantial debt the school had incurred in 2004. This intervention underscored the financial pressures faced by educational institutions and the government’s efforts to ensure their continued operation. Naenae College maintains an open enrolment policy. This means any eligible student is welcome to apply, regardless of their location. The school’s convenient accessibility through various bus routes and its proximity to the Naenae Railway Station make it a practical choice for students across the Hutt Valley. Naenae College has nurtured notable alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields. These range from business tycoons like Sir Bob Jones to influential politicians and renowned artists like Brooke Fraser. The college’s motto, “Kia ihi, kia maru” which translates to “Be strong, be steadfast,” encapsulates the spirit of resilience and determination that Naenae College instills in its students.
