Founded on the principles of “shaga-shojin,” Den-en Chofu University has a rich history. Den-en Chofu University, as it stands today, wasn’t always a university. Its roots trace back to 1926, with the establishment of Chofu Girl’s School and Chofu Kindergarten in Tokyo’s Den-en Chofu area. The school’s founder, Shohei Nishimura, a former sea captain for Nippon Yusen, envisioned a place of higher learning inspired by his travels to Europe and the United States. He even took it upon himself to perform various tasks around the school, embodying the “shaga-shojin” philosophy. A sculpture commemorating his dedication still stands on the campus of Den-en Chofu University. The university’s journey from a girl’s school to a co-educational institution reflects Japan’s evolving educational landscape. In 1967, Chofu Girl’s Junior College was established in Kawasaki, marking a significant step. The institution transitioned to co-education in 1998. This change broadened access to education and reflected the changing times. The school officially became Den-en Chofu University in 2002. It expanded its offerings with a four-year college program. The university further evolved in 2010 with the establishment of the Department of Psychology and Welfare and the Department of Child Educare and Child Development. This expansion highlights Den-en Chofu University’s commitment to social welfare and child care education. The school motto, “shaga-shojin” meaning “putting aside one’s self to diligently help society”, continues to guide the university’s mission. Den-en Chofu University aims to cultivate compassionate, competent individuals who contribute to their communities. Interestingly, the university’s emblem, a five-petal design derived from the “Nadeshiko” flower, symbolizes both the university’s heritage and its students’ unique freedom of mind. This emblem reflects the university’s evolution and its commitment to nurturing individual growth. Den-en Chofu University focuses on providing a comfortable, small-class environment where instructors can offer personalized guidance to each student. This fosters a supportive learning community. It ensures that each student receives individual attention and care. As you stand here, before this unassuming yet impactful institution, consider the profound influence of Den-en Chofu University. It continues to shape future generations of professionals dedicated to social welfare and child care in a rapidly changing Japan.
