From its humble beginnings in a living room on Aspen Street in 1969 the Fisherman of Men Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This wasn’t just any living room. It was the home of Elder Clarence Groover and his wife Sister Nettie Groover the church’s founders. They poured their hearts into building a congregation. Their home became a sanctuary. It hosted 264 services with only three adults in attendance.
The Fisherman of Men Church wasn’t born in a grand cathedral. It started small. It grew organically. Its roots run deep in the Washington D.C community. It blossomed from a simple living room service. It expanded to a house on Maryland Avenue. This house was officially dedicated in 1971. The first floor became the church itself. It even included a baptismal pool. The Groovers lived upstairs and in the basement.
Think about the dedication. Imagine the faith. The early growth of the Fisherman of Men Church was fueled by Sunday School. Over 75 neighborhood children flocked to its classes. Many didn’t even know the Lord’s Prayer. Sister Groover established a choir. The children wore special uniforms. They performed at other local churches.
Their reach extended far beyond Washington D.C. In 1972 two 49-passenger buses carried nearly 100 children to Newark New Jersey. They sang at the Light House Church. This journey marked a turning point. It marked a significant expansion of the Fisherman of Men Church’s impact. That original house became known as “The Cradle of the Fisherman of Men Church.”
The church thrived under Elder Groover’s leadership. Hundreds were baptized. Many received the Holy Ghost. Many experienced healing. This was a period of spiritual growth and profound transformation. By 1977 God led the church to a new location. It moved to 3641 Georgia Avenue NW. This location sits in the heart of a diverse international community.
The Fisherman of Men Church continued to grow. It received its own weekly radio broadcast in 1978. You can still hear it on WYCB 1340 AM and online. The Georgia Avenue building was renovated in 2001. A modern church facility was dedicated in December 2001. The church overcame a “Historic Landmark Designation” in 2012. It stands proudly among neighbors like Howard University Georgetown University and Walter Reed Hospital.
In 2014 the Fisherman of Men Church underwent another transformation. It completed its fourth modernization phase. This involved an exterior facelift and the installation of a 52 kW Solar Energy Powered System. The renovated building was dedicated on April 5 2014. The Fisherman of Men Church continues its mission. It welcomes people from many nationalities and backgrounds. It’s a living embodiment of its enduring spirit. It’s a powerful testament to faith community and perseverance. It’s a story still unfolding right before your eyes.
